The Buffalo State College Political Science and Public Administration Department invites students, faculty, and staff members to a Constitution Day event, "First Amendment, Social Media, and Our Imperiled Democracy," presented by Associate Professor Peter Yacobucci, on Thursday, September 17, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. via Zoom videoconference.

The speech and assembly rights enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution have allowed the open discussion and debate necessary for a thriving democracy. These political freedoms are at the core of why we are the country we are; however, with the growth and increasing omnipresence of social media, these freedoms are under attack. This presentation will open a lively debate on the meaning of the First Amendment, whether its interpretation fits our social media political environment, and the impacts this interpretation is having on the vitality of our democracy. We will examine whether our democracy can survive our new social media environment.
